Boat Trips on Beautiful Lake Malawi

Framed by the countries of Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania, Lake Malawi is the southernmost lake in the East Africa Rift System, and the largest fresh water lake in the world in terms of volume. This inland sea of clear fresh water has the greatest diversity of endemic fish on the planet, including around 700 species of cichlids, and is home to more species of fish than any other lake in the world.

Almost 600 kms long and 75 kms wide with a depth of 700 metres, the most colourful fish can be found just below the surface.

Lake Malawi is a meromictic lake, meaning that its water layers do not mix. The water is warm with a typical surface temperature of between 24 and 29 degrees Centigrade. This stable stratification of the waters creates different environments for the lake’s organisms, as the deeper waters are almost entirely without oxygen and are considerably cooler.

Malawi National Park, situated at the south end of the lake, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its wild life conservation and its outstanding universal value. The park is also rich with mammals, reptiles and birds.

Tiny villages, resorts and lodges along the shore of the lake offer an extensive variety of opportunities to explore the waters. Sailing and kayaking are at the top of the list for those eager to investigate the various bays and coves along the shoreline.

There is a distinctive beach town atmosphere to some of the more popular sections and resorts on Lake Malawi. These resorts, perfect for low budget travellers and backpackers offer affordable accommodation and an enthusiastic night life.

Several upmarket lodges offer a more exclusive experience and boast their own private beaches where guests can step out of their cabins straight on the beach.

The best time to visit Lake Malawi is early May to September, when the temperature is mild and the risk of Malaria is at its lowest and the water is calm and clear. During the rainy season, October to April, the water becomes murky due to the consequent run off affect.

Boat trips offer an unparalleled way to experience the lake’s beauty and spectacular sunsets. Options range from organised pleasure cruises to full day excursions, with a choice of destinations to places of interest along the shore or to small islands just off shore.

From traditional wooden boats to modern fibre glass speed boats, some will incorporate snorkelling or fishing stops along the way.

Brightly coloured fish are easily visible through the crystal-clear water.

Leisurely cruises on larger boats can also be arranged from some of the main hotels and can last hours or days, as well as trips by motor launch and sailing cruises. While Catamarans, complete with a skipper, can be chartered for private adventures.

Daytime cruises can include diving, snorkelling and swimming as well as overnight beach camping.

The Ilala Ferry, a large motorised vessel offers scheduled ferry services up and down the lake. This service is much used by the local people, but also offers passage and cabin accommodation to tourists. Bookings may be made through the local Tour and Safari companies.

Boat safaris are also offered along sections of the river Shire, though the Liwonde National Park and Majeti Wildlife Reserve.
